‘Grassroots Conservation – Strategies and Challenges’
Dr Stephen Prowse is the Birds Queensland Conservation Officer and Chair of Protect the Bush Alliance. He is a scientist who worked in the CSIRO and was CEO of Cooperative Research Centres in Emerging Infectious Disease and in Wound Care. He has a particular interest in the translation of research information into policy and practice to achieve better environmental outcomes. He has over 100 publications in scientific journals, industry magazines and online articles.
Dr Prowse will talk about the way in which Birds Queensland and Protect the Bush Alliance works with community groups and engages Councils, Governments and developers in attempts to achieve outcomes that protect habitat and biodiversity. He will discuss local examples (Mt Coot-tha Zipline, Oxley Creek Common, and Dowse Lagoon) as well as mining projects (Colton and Styx coal mines) to illustrate various approaches.
